Genk, Belgium — IPTE Prodel has installed an automated assembly and test line covering the entire process for the efficient manufacture of high-performance batteries used in newly engi- neered battery-powered e-cars. The product manu- factured, a polymer-ion battery pack, consists of two units weighing a total of 80 kilograms, secure- ly placed in an aluminum casing. In addition to the various mechanical assembly steps, the production line also includes a variety of test stations for qual- ity and reliability assurance. The production process starts with pressing together the separate battery plates which results in a sandwich-like battery cell construction. These pressed compo- nents are then inserted into the rectangular box together with isolating material and welded using ultrasonic technology (if needed). A high-current cable, screw-fastened to each individual battery cell, provides the electrical connections of the sin- gle battery cells. Then, the two units are placed in the common aluminum casing which is securely closed by a tightly con- trolled precise crimping process, fol- lowed by a leakage test to examine the seal tightness. Then, a tempera- ture sensor will be put on top of the finished battery pack checking tem- perature stress and behavior. The layout of the flexible produc-

These trans- formers are used for isolation and volt- age conversion for switched mode power supplies in datacom and inter- mediate bus converter applications.
