On this trip through Guatemala, we explore the ancient lands of the Maya. We visit the early Mayan cities of Tikal, Quirigua and Copan (in Honduras). We also travel through the Guatemalan highlands, spending time in traditional mountain villages and visiting local markets. On the way, we explore Lake Atitlan by boat and search for the elusive Quetzal bird in Biotopo Nature Reserve.
15 day tour itinerary
Day 1 Join tour Guatemala City. Days 2/3 Copan Explore colonial Guatemala City and visit the Mayan ceremonial site of Copan. Day 4 Caribbean Travel by bus and boat to Livingstone via Quirigua. Free afternoon to explore this laid back coastal town. Day 5 Rio Dulce Enjoy a boat trip along the cliff-lined waters of the river. Travel north to Tikal. Day 6 Tikal Discover the vast Mayan temples that pierce the jungle canopy. Explore Tikal with a local guide before travelling on to Flores. Day 7 Ceibal Visit the Mayan site of Ceibal and continue to Coban. Day 8 Quetzals Search for Quetzal birds in the cloud forest at Biotopo Reserve. Drive to Santa Catarina, visiting the Iximche ruins en route. Days 9/10 Lake
Atitlan Explore the lake and admire the views of the three volcanic peaks: Atitlan, San Pedro and Toliman. Take a boat trip to local villages and meet a local community. Days 11/12 Villages Spend two nights in the small hill village of Nebaj in the Ixil Triangle. Visit the colourful local market of Solola. Optional walk though mountains. Days 13/14 Chichicastenango and Antigua Visit Chichicastenango Market en route to Antigua. Explore this colonial city nestled in the valley between the volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. Day 15 Tour ends Antigua.
