India had long been a destination on my travel wish list and l felt that a small group tour was the perfect way to do it. Early starts, plenty of culture and the odd monument thrown in and you had me sold! The Taj Mahal is one attraction l have always wanted to visit. It certainly didn’t disappoint and is one of the most beautiful monuments l have ever seen. An 8 day tour of the Golden Triangle is a fantastic taster of India and l will defi nitely return to explore other parts of the country in the future. I was told that you never visit India just once, and that is completely true.

A safari holiday had long been on my travel wish list and I fi nally decided 2013 was the year to go! This was my fi rst Explore adventure and my fi rst time travelling to Africa (Botswana) so I was a little nervous. I needn’t have worried at all - the holiday was fantastic. The group I travelled with were great fun, our Tour Leader Bibi was brilliant and the tour itself was amazing; visiting Victoria Falls, spotting all of the wildlife (including three different sightings of leopard!) and camping in the wild for the fi rst time will certainly be moments I will never forget. I now need to start planning my next adventure!

I had always wanted to trek the famous Inca Trail in Peru. I fi nally did it in 2013; the experience more than lived up to my high expectations. As well as spectacular scenery and the physical challenge, camping under the stars and waking up to views of snow-capped mountains are two of the highlights I’ll never forget. Absolutely perfect escapism.

It was wonderful to get the opportunity to travel to Kurdistan. There are few western visitors as yet, and the Kurds were exceptionally pleased to see us. “Welcome to Kurdistan! Where are you from?” “Britain”. “Then you are especially welcome!” Many of them had lived in the UK as refugees, and now they are back in Iraq rebuilding their country. To visit a country with such a resilient attitude after their tragic recent history was a privilege. Then off on the Krakow to Prague trip – nearly all the travel between cities is by train and within them by trams, trolley buses, and metro. What better way to see four countries (plus a side trip to Vienna), and once again, with a brilliant group of people. Oh, and did I mention the two amazing Explore Tour Leaders? David Short in Iraq, and Miro Janotka in Europe – I don’t think anyone could fi nd any better leader than either of them.

I have a theory that cycling is the best way to see a country and after 12 cycle trips (so far) of gathering empirical evidence, I believe the theory is sound. More testing though is necessary. These trips are not about riding fast or clocking up the K’s. They are about connection with the people and landscape, the cheery “Ola!” from the locals and the ability to stop, look more closely and take a photo when it suits you. As George Orwell almost said, “Two wheels good, four wheels bad.”
