250 km Golden Road to Samarkand UZ Tour essentials Uzbekistan: cradle of the ancient Silk road


Join us on the ancient Silk Road as we travel through this remote Central Asian landscape. Highlights include the walled city of Khiva, where we discover a maze of twisted alleyways, medieval mosques and tombs. Following the old caravan route south, we see the fi ne Islamic architecture of Bokhara and Samarkand. Along the way we will experience the nomadic lifestyle and stay in traditional felt yurts.


11 day tour itinerary


Day 1 Join tour Tashkent. A guided tour of the capital’s main attractions. Although extensively rebuilt in 1966 after an earthquake, parts of this modern city still refl ect its 2000-year heritage. Days 2/3 Khiva Explore this old caravan halt’s maze of twisting alleyways, medieval mosques, tombs and palaces. Days 4/6 Bokhara Discover the towering Kalyan Minaret, the old summer palace of the Emir and the 12th century Char Minar mosque. Day 7 Desert yurt camp Visit the 10th century Mir Said Bakhram Mausoleum. Stay in a traditional felt yurt (nomadic

tent). There is the chance to ride camels at nearby Lake Aydarkul. Days 8/9 Samarkand Stormed by Alexander the Great and reduced to ashes by Genghis Khan, this city still refl ects the rule of 14th century conqueror Tamerlane. Discover the blue-domed mosques of Registan Square and visit the Gur Emir, the tomb of this ‘Great Destroyer’. Day 10 Tashkent Return to the capital by train. Day 11 Tour ends Tashkent.

Combine your tour


Kyrgyzstan Extension Whilst in Central Asia why not extend your tour to travel further east along the Silk Route to explore the unique culture and wild landscapes of neighbouring Kyrgyzstan. After fl ying into the capital Bishkek, we head into the Tien Shan mountains, discover vast lakes and deep gorges and stay in simple guesthouses and traditional felt yurts.
