Travels beyond the Irrawaddy


This adventurous tour of Burma (Myanmar) takes us to fascinating sights beyond the classic highlights. We travel deep into the Mon State to Ogre Island and join local pilgrims as they admire the sunset from the sacred Golden Rock at Mount Kyaikhtiyo. We marvel at the grandeur of Bagan, discover authentic rural life in and around Hsipaw and witness the fascinating world of Inle Lake. We also cross the dramatic Gokteik Viaduct by train and explore the cities of Mandalay and Rangoon.


21 day tour itinerary


Day 1 Join tour Rangoon. Day 2 Rangoon Visit the gold encrusted Shwedagon Pagoda. Day 3 Golden Rock Visit one of Burma’s most important pilgrimage sites - a gold covered rock dramatically perched on the top of Mount Kyaiktiyo. Days 4/5 Mawlamyine Learn about Mon culture on Ogre Island and discover the old British colonial capital of Mawlamyine, a charming and sleepy city. Day 6 Rangoon Visit Taukyan WWII cemetery on the way back to Rangoon. Days 7/8 Bagan Explore some of the many ancient temples on the vast plains of Bagan.

Day 9 Monywa Cruise along the Irrawaddy River to Pakkou and visit Buddhist pagodas in Monywa. Day 10 Mandalay Discover thousands of hidden Buddha statues in the sandstone caves of the Po Win hills on the road to Mandalay. Days 11/12 Mandalay Explore the surrounding ancient royal capitals of Mingun, Inwa and Amarapura. Day 13 Pyin Oo Lwin Drive north to the charming old British hillstation formerly known as Maymyo. Day 14 Hsipaw Cross the Gokteik Viaduct by local train. Day 15 Hsipaw Cruise on the Dutawaddy river and


enjoy this remote rural town. Day 16 Mandalay Visit a coffee plantation on the way back to Mandalay. Day 17 Kalaw Visit Pindaya caves en route to the colonial hill town of Kalaw. Days 18/19 Inle Lake Take a longtail boat trip to see the fl oating gardens, stilt villages and leg rowing fi shermen. Day 20 Rangoon Time for last minute shopping and sightseeing. Day 21 Tour ends Rangoon.
