Following Madeira’s characteristic ‘levadas’ (narrow irrigation channels) we walk some of the best trails on this dramatically beautiful volcanic island. Hike the impressive ‘balcony walk’ - a path hewn into the cliff face - to the summit of Pico Ruivo (1862m). We also spend time in the capital Funchal where we can enjoy some fresh fi sh and a glass of Madeira wine!
8 day tour itinerary
Day 1 Join tour Funchal. Day 2 Sao Lourenco’s Peninsula Follow the spectacular cliff path along the peninsula for impressive views of the north coast. Day 3 Santana Take a path winding inland through forests from Pico das Pedras to Ilha. Drive along the impressive coastal corniche to the volcanic rock pools of Porto Moniz. Day 4 Levada Trails Cross from north to

south along Madeira’s famous levadas - mini canals used by early settlers to irrigate sugar and banana plantations. Day 5 Ponta do Pargo Explore the west of the island. We walk along the Levada Novo from Ponta do Pargo through farmland and admire the views from the 400m high cliff tops. Day 6 ‘Balcony Walk’ Take the spectacular path hewn from the cliff walls to Pico Ruivo,

Madeira’s highest peak (1862m). Day 7 Funchal Enjoy a free day in Funchal. Optional activities include a Madeira wine tour, a visit to the botanical gardens, a boat trip or a tour of the colourful fi sh and fl ower markets. Day 8 Tour ends Funchal.

Trekking Details: On this trek we walk for an average of between 4-6 hours each day. Parts of the balcony walk are not suitable for vertigo sufferers. One day is left free.
