On this trip to Peru we trek along an extended route of the classic Inca Trail. We hike past Mount Salkatanay (6271m), through the Inca Tunnel and along the ridge of the Urubamba River. Ascending the staircase to the Sun Gate, we view the magnifi cent citadel of Machu Picchu for the fi rst time. We tour the ancient mystical site including its temples, stairways, palaces and gabled stone dwellings.

Discover the ancient Incan Empire of the Sun as we enjoy a four-day trek following the famous Inca Trail to the archaelogical jewel of Machu Picchu. We also explore the former Inca capital of Cusco and sail on Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, where we experience the local culture as we visit the native Indian communities on Taquile Island.
Day 1 Join tour Lima. Day 2 Ballestas Islands Drive south to Paracas Marine Reserve. There is the option to take a boat trip to this wildlife haven. Day 3 Nazca Lines Discover the mysterious patterns etched in the desert fl oor from viewing platforms. Days 4/5 Pacifi c Coast Drive to Arequipa via Puerto Inca. Day 6 Arequipa Explore Peru’s colonial gem and the remarkable Santa Catalina Convent. Days 7/8 Colca Canyon Drive to the heart of Peru’s Grand Canyon and search for the Andean Condor. Travel to Puno. Days 9/10 Taquile Island Take a boat ride across Lake Titicaca and spend a night on Taquile Island with a traditional Indian community. Day 11 Altiplano Travel across the Andes to Cusco. Day 12 Cusco Explore the vibrant city. Visit Sacsayhuaman fortress. Days 13/17 Inca Trail Begin a four-day trek along the old Inca highway to Machu Picchu. Day 18 Ollantaytambo Choose from optional activities including whitewater rafting or visit the lively Pisac Market. Day 19 Lima Fly to the capital. Day 20 Tour ends Lima.
Day 1 Tour starts Cusco. Walking tour of the ancient Inca capital. Days 2/3 Cusco Visit Sacsayhuaman fortress and the colourful Pisac Market. Optional whitewater rafting in the Sacred Valley. Days 4/10 Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Hike the High Inca Trail to the spectacular remains of Machu Picchu. Trek past the snow-capped Salkatanay peak (6271m) and camp at Sisaypampa Pass (4250m). Traverse the Andes, trek through cloud forest and cross Dead Woman’s Pass (4200m). Explore the ruins of Llactapata, Sayaqmarca and Winay Wayna along the way. Reach the Sun Gate for our fi rst view of Machu Picchu. Take a guided tour of the ancient ‘Lost City’ of the Incas. Optional dip in thermal springs to relax after the trek. Revisit the site for sunrise the next day. Catch a train from Aguas Calientes back to Cusco. Day 11 Cusco Today is free to relax or take an optional trip to the unusual Inca ruins of Moray. Day 12 Tour ends Cusco.
