Nat Saenz IMS President On behalf of the InternationalMetallographic Society I

would like to welcome all of you to Microscopy and Micro- analysis 2011 in Nashville, TN. IMS is pleased to have contributed to the exciting technical program for the tenth year. We thank MSA Program Chair David Giovannucci, MSA Program Vice-Chair Luke Brewer, MAS Co-Chair MasashiWatanabe, and especially IMS Co-Chair Don Susan for developing an excellent roster of presentations. There will be many opportunities during the week to

socialize with old and new friends and exchange ideas: the Opening Reception at the Renaissance Hotel, the IMS Ice Breaker, and the Awards Dinner onWednesday night. Once again our special event will be the IMS Henry

Clifton Sorby Award Lecture, presented by this year’s awardee Dr. David B. Williams, President, University of Alabama, Huntsville. Dr.Williams’many years of experience in micros- copy, leading to his university administration career, will be the focus of his presentation: “Reflections on Microscopy & Analysis: From Viewing the Small World to Leading on a Larger Stage.” Among the many technical sessions are the following four sessions that might be of special interest to IMS mem-

bers: Effects of Metallographic and Other Preparation Tech- niques on Microstructural Characterization ~A11!, Failure Analysis: Applications of Electron and Optical Microscopy ~P6!, Microscopy and Microanalysis Methods Applied to Joining Technologies ~P8!, and Microanalysis of Cement and ConcreteMaterials: State of the Art,Methodologies and Standardization ~P3!. Two additional events besides the technical presenta-

tions are worth considering: the short course on Sunday entitled: “How to Organize and Run a Failure Investigation” taught by Dr. Daniel Dennies and “It’s a Family Affair.” The Family Affair is designed for children of all ages. It involves microscopic analysis of biological and material samples. The title is “CSI Nashville.” Please visit the exhibit of the entries for this year’s IMS

Metallographic contest. Posters or images are entered in 11 categories and judged by a panel of expert metallographers. Best in Show receives the Jacquet Lucas Award, which in- cludes a cash award of $3000. The week in Nashville will be exciting, filled with excel-

lent presentations, exhibits of state of the art equipment, and socializing with old and new friends and colleagues.
