Nestor J. Zaluzec Microscopy Society of America FellowMicroscopists andMicroanalysts, Colleagues and most
importantly Students, welcome to Microscopy & Microanalysis 2011 here in Nashville, Tennessee, our seventeenth conference under that appellation. In 1974 I attended my first ~E!MSA meeting in St. Louis as a
graduate student and I am honored to be one of your hosts as President in Nashville during M&M 2011. This conference also represents the 69th time we as members of theMicroscopy Society of America have convened to meet as a professional and scientific assembly. Together with our colleagues from MAS and the IMS, we come to this conference with a purpose: some to present our research to our peers, others learn from the collective expertise of our attendee’s, and some to attend the worlds largest exhibition of state-of-the-art instrumentation used to explore our world from the macroscopic to the sub-Ångstrom scale. Regardless of the reason for which each of you attend M&M 2011, we all benefit from the one-on-one interactions that are facilitated by this meet- ing as well as any collaborations which may develop in the future. I’m also pleased to see the meeting grow. Back in 1974 there
were 575 papers; this year there will be well over 1200 presenta- tions during the week by our collective attendee’s and exhibitors. In addition, we have seen the growth of the meeting with a larger exhibition, expanded weekend short courses, vendor tutorials, pre-conference specialist meetings, in-week workshops, and new for this year, Continuing Education Units ~CEMU’s!, all of which are in response to your input and requests.
