In the instrumentation realm he iswidely known for his skill and precision as an operator and for his numerous contributions to the field of quantitative elemental and composi- tional measurement and characterization, most notably X-ray dif- fraction ~XRD!, electron beam instruments such as electron microprobes ~EPMA! and scanning microscopes ~SEM! equipped with wavelength-dispersive and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrom- eters, and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometers ~ICP- MS!.Dr.Kremser obtained a Bachelor’s degree inGeology fromthe University of Connecticut, and earned a PhD in Earth and Plan- etary Sciences fromWashington University in St. Louis. Dr. Kremser joined MAS ~and MSA! in 1982 and has served our society with distinction and tireless energy in several roles, most recently as MAS Director from 2005–2007 and asMembership Services Chair from 2008–2011. In this latter role he has reinvigorated our membership services function, assisted in the introduction of new technology to the job ~such as electronic voting!, and continues to provide sound advice to MAS Council on many different topics. At the local level, Dan has contributed significantly to three regional societies: theMicros- copy Society of the Ohio River Valley ~MSORV!, the Microscopy Society of Northeast Ohio ~MSNO!, and the Central StatesMicros- copy and Microanalysis Society ~CSM&MS!, serving as President ~or currently as President-Elect! of the above as well as Trustee and Secretary. Dr. Kremser has also been a member of the American Geophysical Union since 1978.
