RFMD Extends the Family with 5 times smaller FEM


Developed in collaboration with Ember, the RF6515 front end module (FEM) is suited to ZigBee(R)- Based, Smart Energy and ISM Applications in the 2.4-2.5GHz band.


RF Micro Devices has announced the availability of the RF6515 front end module (FEM).


This feature-rich device is claimed to improve the performance of 2.4GHz - 2.5GHz ISM band wireless applications requiring longer-range operation at high efficiency. These include WLAN, Zigbee, Smart Energy/Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Home Area Networks (HANs).


The RF6515 FEM integrates a 20dBm PA, harmonic transmit filtering and a double-pole, double-throw (DPDT) switch. It also features an integrated balun, which provides a balanced 50 ohm match for the Rx and Tx signal paths.


In a 3.5mm x 3.5mm x 0.5mm package, the RF6515 is claimed to be five times smaller than competitive offerings, significantly minimizing customer product footprints and greatly reducing assembly costs and external component counts.


Designed in collaboration with Ember, when the RF6515 and Ember’s EM250 are used together, they deliver industry-leading performance while shortening customer design time and accelerating product time-to-market.


The RF6515 is available immediately and volume pricing begins at $1.44.


Renesas to Acquire Nokia’s Wireless Modem Business for $200 million


The firms will form a strategic business alliance for modem technology development in future radio technologies.

By forming a strategic business alliance to develop modem technologies for HSPA+/LTE (Evolved High- Speed Packet Access / Long-Term Evolution) and its evolution, the companies aim to concentrate on future radio technologies


As part of this alliance, the companies have entered into an agreement whereby Renesas is to acquire Nokia’s wireless modem business for approximately $US 200 million.


The planned transfer of Nokia’s wireless modem business enables Renesas to maximize the value of Nokia’s technology assets and engineering expertise in delivering advanced mobile platform solutions to the market by combining them with Renesas’ market-proven multimedia processing and RF technologies.


Together with Renesas Electronics’ robust line-up of application processors, RF transceiver ICs, high power amplifiers, and power management devices, the wireless modem technologies enable Renesas Electronics to deliver a complete mobile platform solution to the market.


The wireless modem business to be transferred to Renesas Electronics includes Nokia’s wireless modem technologies for LTE, HSPA and GSM standards, which have been used for billions of handsets in the global market over the years.


Furthermore, Nokia transfers Renesas Electronics certain patents related to the transferred technology asset. The planned transfer would also include approximately 1,100 Nokia R&D professionals, the vast majority of whom are located in Finland, India, the UK and Denmark.


The planned transfer is expected to further strengthen Renesas’ position as one of the leading chipset vendors in the 3G and LTE market that is capable of providing one-stop mobile platform solutions, supporting an extensive range of modem protocols from GSM to LTE, and integrating advanced multimedia and computer processing capabilities.
