Veeco Lights Up with Neo-Neon Order for K465i Tool

The first MOCVD reactor will be used for LED manufacturing, with Neo-Neon planning to expand its LED wafer output seven-fold over the next three years

Veeco Instruments has received an order from Neo- Neon Holdings, a lighting company listed on the Hong Kong exchanges, for its first Veeco TurboDisc K465i Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) system to support its LED manufacturing capacity ramp at its JiangMen, China factory. Veeco received the order during the recently completed second quarter.

Jurgen Yeh, Chief Technology Officer, commented, “Neo-Neon plans to expand our LED wafer output seven-fold over the next three years. We have decided to include Veeco’s K465i MOCVD system in our plans due to its proven high productivity as well as the recent uniformity and repeatability advances that Veeco has achieved. We intend to move quickly to expand our position in the general illumination market, and require supplier partners that can keep pace with our plans.”

To fund its expansion, Neo-Neon has recently raised NT$2.06 billion (U.S. $64 million) through a share issuance in Taiwan. Bill Miller, Ph.D., Senior VP and General Manager of Veeco’s MOCVD Operations commented, “Neo-Neon is a recognized LED industry leader with a diversified product range and broad customer base. We are therefore gratified to be a part of their capacity expansion plans.”

Neo-Neon is a vertically integrated LED lighting manufacturer. Neo-Neon International, founded in Taiwan in 1978, is one of the largest seasonal decorative lighting manufacturers in the world. In 1989 Neo-Neon moved its production to He Shan, Guangdong Province on the Chinese Mainland.

Neo-Neon manufactures its own chips, packages, encapsulates and LED lighting products and is currently ranked in the top six LED companies in the world according to its number of patents, and in the top three in terms of lumens efficacy of its LEDs.

“Since 2004, we’ve sold almost 100 units in ammonia service around the world,” said Lisa Bergson, Tiger Optics’ founder and chief executive. “We offer the most exacting and proven specifications in the field. With the surge in demand for HB LEDs, we realized that we could help our customers by designing an instrument tailored to their specific needs. We know that the purer the gas, the brighter the LEDs, and the bigger the margins for LED makers.”

High-brightness LEDs offer brighter, cooler light, with lower power consumption and longer life than traditional fluorescent lamps. Unlike fluorescents, HB LEDs use no mercury. Widely used in mobile appliances, such as cell phones, cameras, and the

Say Hello to Tiger Optics’ First Ever Ammonia Analyzer

The ALOHA analyzer has been designed specifically for HB LED-related applications

Tiger Optics, keeping pace with explosive growth in the High Brightness Light-Emitting Diode market, plans to introduce ALOHA, the world’s first ammonia analyzer designed and manufactured exclusively for HB LED-related applications, at the Semicon West trade show in San Francisco.

Tiger, a manufacturer of laser-based trace gas analyzers renowned for clean technology, already sells devices to HB-LED makers, tool manufacturers and the gas companies that supply ammonia, the favored source of nitrogen for the production of Gallium nitride (GaN) compound semiconductor wafers, a core component of HB LEDs.
