20 SMPTE SESSIONS TO TACKLE

Invited to consider the main industry themes impacting IBC2025, Sally-Ann D’Amato – who became SMPTE executive director in January after more than two decades with the society – responds: “AI will, of course, continue to be a huge focus, as it has been for the past few years. But I think we’ll also see more attention on things like content authenticity and sustainability. These areas are becoming increasingly important, giving us fresh topics to explore and new challenges to tackle, especially as we look for better ways to safeguard against disinformation, fake news and copyright issues.” A number of these themes are being explored during SMPTE’s sessions taking place from 14:30 to 17:30 today. This includes a session being overseen by Carys Hughes, who is Principal PQ/Display Engineer at Sky as well as SMPTE Education Director, UK Section Manager, and newly recognised SMPTE fellow. “Carys Hughes is leading a session on Young Innovators, spotlighting the next generation of talent driving our industry forward,” says D’Amato. “Also on the programme is SMPTE President and SVP, Head of AI Product Technology at Deluxe, Richard Welsh, who is hosting a thought-provoking session offering a creator’s perspective on AI tools, exploring both the opportunities and challenges in this fast-evolving space.”

In addition, a ‘SMPTE Snapshot’ – incorporating updates on society membership, standards and education efforts – features SMPTE speakers including Director of Education Maja Davidovic, Director of Standards Development Thomas Bause Mason, and Education Vice President Polly Hickling. This afternoon will feature a deep-dive into Catena, the open-source control standard currently under development, and for which the initial documents were introduced in June at the SMPTE Technology Control meetings in Tokyo. Sessions will wrap up with a ‘State of the Industry’ panel, addressing major trends and challenges with contributors from various industry organisations. D’Amato adds: “To close out the afternoon, SMPTE and BT are co-hosting our annual member social at BT’s innovative stand. This informal gathering is open to all, and we look

forward to reconnecting with friends and colleagues, as well as making new connections.” Expanding upon the broader global and commercial pressures facing the industry, D’Amato replies: “The global economy is certainly unsettled right now, and everyone is searching for some sense of stability. Like many, we’re feeling the impact of budget cuts and corporate belt-tightening. SMPTE members are embedded in every part of the industry worldwide, so the challenges facing the industry directly affect our members. But addressing those challenges has often led to a greater sense of community, with our members

INDUSTRY’S ‘MOST PRESSING TOPICS’ Artifi cial intelligence and the next generation of talent are among the high-profi le topics being addressed by SMPTE during this year’s IBC Show, as Executive Director Sally-Ann D’Amato tells David Davies

pulling together to ensure we continue to provide the education and connection that our industry needs.”

As to her own personal expectations for IBC2025, she says: “I’m especially interested in the sessions focused on AI and sports broadcasting. There are some really compelling panels and keynotes on those topics that I’m excited to attend. Both areas are also key themes at SMPTE’s upcoming Media Technology Summit in October, with dedicated programme days for each, so I’m particularly keen to hear the global perspectives and fresh insights that the IBC programme offers.”
