04 5G GIVES NHL A SPORTING CHANCE FOR TRANSFORMATION
(L-R): Moderator Gordon Brooks, Zixi; Tim Stevens, Verizon; Grant Nodine, NHL BY MONICA HECK
Following a record-breaking 5G live sports production pilot that took place on the NAB 2024 showfl oor with Zixi, Verizon and other partners, Grant Nodine, SVP Technology at the NHL, outlined the importance of 5G in this achievement for future NHL live sports coverage plans. “People on mobile devices in the venue were getting a live produced feed of that game that was less than a second
behind real time,” he enthused during ‘Delivering NHL Content over 5G Networks’ on the Showcase Theatre. “This gets us into the ‘one feed to rule them all’ territory. Being able to get a single feed in cloud means I can focus my innovation efforts on what I want to do with that feed, what kind of renditions I want to make to give fans different views of that game and on how to diversify our content to react to the new ways people consume media.”
Tim Stevens, Global Leader, Strategic Innovation for Media & Entertainment at Verizon, added: “With this universal source, we can start addressing different platforms and audience fragmentation, not only for a long-term strategy but for immediate goals. This has given us the toolset to start exploring different use cases and workfl ows.”
Also on the Showcase Theatre stage, Jared Timmins, VP of Media Innovation at Diversifi ed,
explained how successful intelligent orchestration transformation can be enabled by moving to a digital operating model, which is crucial if clients are to keep up with the pace of transformation. “Making sure that all the
processes are in place and digital allows us a level of visibility into project status, development status and reporting that enables progressively faster change among our client base,” he said.
DATA IS THE BEDROCK OF VIDEO BUSINESS PERFORMANCE BY ADRIAN PENNINGTON
Data is essential to the industry and M&E generates vast amounts of it but sourcing valuable insights can be like drinking from a fi rehose. “Better use of data is the edge that underpins all others,” said moderator Paul Erickson, Principal, Erickson Strategy + Insights, at the IBC Content Everywhere Stage session.
The session title ‘Informing Business Strategies With Deep Data’ is relevant to a lot of the conversations at IBC2024, said Erickson. “Insights from data means performing better as a business – to grow ROI, maximise returns and grow effi ciencies. The video industry is intensely focused on fundamental business performance in a way that I have never seen before at IBC. It’s an evolution of

the market as it matures.” Ali Hodjat, VP of Product Marketing, Intertrust Technologies, called out “the rise of Web3 leveraged on the blockchain” to help creators distribute their work online with transparent management of royalties.” In Web2, he said, subscribers and broadcasters had a centralised platform to reach out to audiences and it was one-way only. “Consumers were passive. Web3 enables fans and creators to be more engaged in
the content and opens up business models to interact with content, such as fan-generated content.” Gracenote claims to be the world’s leading provider of metadata for entertainment. “Metadata is the rich images that show up on user interfaces, the pithy descriptions that recommend content to you and contextualised information to streamline the user journey,” said Vikram Kulkarni, Vice President, EMEA, Gracenote.
The company has tracked over 3.1
billion individual pieces of content distributed in the UK, Germany, Mexico and Canada since 2020. “This represents immense consumer choice, immense complexity for our clients and immense operational complexity for us,” he said. “Despite the increase in content there is an expectation from every user that it is searchable and available – but most people don’t know what they want to watch. Cutting through that discoverable user journey is critical.”
