IBC INNOVATION AWARDS WINNERS REVEALED
BY JO RUDDOCK
The Paris Olympics, National Hockey League and LaLiga were among the winners at last night’s IBC Innovation Awards, in a ceremony dominated by sporting innovation. In addition, the International Honour for Excellence was formally presented to Ukrainian journalist Mstyslav Chernov. In addition to reporting from conflicts in Iraq, Syria and Nagorno- Karabakh, Chernov directed 20 Days in Mariupol, a multi-award-winning documentary chronicling the siege of the city by Russian forces in 2022. Of the documentary, Chernov said: “My vision was to take an audience and place them right in the middle of a war zone to help the audience to experience what it’s like to be trapped in the siege, what it’s like not to know anything, to be impacted by misinformation and lose your family and feel that rage when you are denied even that truth of your loss.”
Paying tribute to his Associated
Press colleagues, he added: “The help of my international colleagues was so valuable while editing, because they helped me to keep that distance – keep it personal, but still keep a distance and not lecture the audience.” In the Content Creation category, Olympic Broadcasting Services and partners were recognised for their

The National Hockey League, in partnership with Verizon, AWS, Zixi, Vizrt and Evertz, took home the Content Distribution award for producing a 5G and Edge compute framework for assembly, control and delivery of live broadcast, while LaLiga was recognised in the Content Everywhere category for working with Play Anywhere and Ease Live to enable true fan interactivity for itself and its broadcast and streaming partners. Rounding off a successful evening for sporting events, France Télévisions took home the Environment & Sustainability accolade for reducing CO2 emissions by 300 tons via a 100% glass-to-glass cloud production and private 5G network, as it broadcast
a 24/7 channel providing coverage of the Olympic Torch Relay. Meanwhile, the Social Impact
award went to Sesame Workshop for its Watch Play Learn Distribution Hub, which allows government agencies and aid organisations to preview and request videos for children in crisis settings. Finally, The Best Technical Paper
award was given to Joshua Maraval, Nicolas Ramin and Lu Zhang for their paper ‘Advancements in Radiance Field Techniques for Volumetric Video Generation: A Technical Overview’.
Michael Crimp, IBC CEO, said: “This year’s expanded awards spotlight the fact that there are many areas in which we are seeing the media community collaborate to take us in new, exciting directions.
