12 AI, SECURITY AND PLATFORM
DEVELOPMENT IN FOCUS Russell Trafford-Jones, Chair of the IET Media Technical Network, tells David Davies about plans for this year’s series of John Logie Baird Lectures
Named in honour of the legendary television innovator, the annual John Logie Baird lectures at IBC – organised by the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET)’s broadcast adjunct, the IET Media Technical Network (TN) – have never been reluctant to tackle the industry’s hot-button topics. That tradition continues here at IBC2024, where a trio of lectures is taking place today in Room E102, from 14:00-16:45. Given its prominence in media business and technology discussions, it’s not surprising that artifi cial intelligence is the focus of one session, entitled ‘AI/ML in Media Revisited’. Following on from a series of IET Media TN lectures delivered earlier this year and available on the organisation’s YouTube channel, this new session will be moderated by Polly Hickling, Learning and Development at Eviden, and presented by Richard Welsh, SVP Innovation at Deluxe. Acknowledging the phenomenal amount of R&D taking place in so many areas and applications, the lecture will offer “a wide ride through the ‘meat’ of what is being done with exciting and challenging new technologies, taking the hype out and showing the real use”. Russell Trafford-Jones, Chair of the IET Media
Technical Network, says: “The aim here is to bring as much of the academic engineering expertise as we can into the talk, so that as an industry it’s possible to see the practical, real-world applications of AI. Then, for anybody who’s interested or keen to extend their knowledge into the actual technology, we want to help them see what’s going to happen in the future and how they might get to the next iteration of the benefi ts that can be provided.”
CYBERSECURITY CONCERNS The troubling number of cyber-attacks on large organisations in countless different sectors makes security another logical topic. In ‘Content Cyber Security’, panellists including Terri Davies, President of the Motion Picture Association’s Trusted Partner Network, and Tami Hoffman, Director of News Distribution and Commercial Innovation, ITN, will address the future of content security. Among other aspects, they will consider whether quantum computing threatens supposedly ‘unbreakable’ encryption solutions, the potential role of blockchain, and

issues of trust for content owners when it comes to their wider supply chains.
The complex issues underpinning the development of new content platforms in the streaming age will also be explored. ‘Strategies for TV and Video Platforms’ will acknowledge the impact of TV Everywhere, IP delivery and the rise of software-defi ned platforms, a shift which has “exploded the permutations and combinations of technologies, architectural choices and decisions you need to make to provide you with everything needed to deliver subscription choices”.
Panellists including Jakob Huhn, Director of Sales TVP, Zattoo, will explore the plethora
of options involved in build, buy & operate decision-making, including the one-stop solutions provided by a growing array of platform developers. As in previous years, the IET will have a place on the IBC Technical Papers Committee through Ian Nock, Vice Chair of the IET Media Technical Network. The judging and publication of the Technical Papers is a process that Trafford-Jones deems to be “a key touch- point of IBC for us and another important way of raising awareness of the academic side of the industry – [the part which delivers] the research and science that needs to happen so we can all benefi t.”
Russell Trafford-Jones is Chair of the IET Media Technical Network, one of IBC’s owners.
