COVID-19 UPDATE
Coronavirus – Council
services update Throughout the last few months there have been a number of disruptions to Council services because of COVID-19.
We’ve kept all essential services running throughout and we’re now beginning to reinstate more services as soon as Government guidance allows and it is safe to do so.
The cashiers desks in our Customer Service centres will re-open from Monday, July 20.
Earlier this month Billingham, Norton, Stockton, Thornaby Central and Yarm libraries reopened for book returns and book collections.
And from Monday, July 20 this will be extended to include limited browsing and access to ICT facilities from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.
Preston Park Museum will also re-open on Monday, July 20 and a number of measures will be in place to ensure everybody’s safety, including a requirement that people book their visit in advance. Details are available on the Preston Park Museum website www.

National praise for Stockton town centre
plans Plans to demolish Stockton’s Castlegate Shopping Centre and Swallow Hotel have won praise in a hard-hitting report about the plight of the nation’s high streets in a
post-COVID world. The Build Back Better report, put together by an expert team led by Bill Grimsey, says the pandemic has simply accelerated the shrinking of town centre retail.
It calls for councils to be given greater powers to fight back and change town centres, adding that local leadership, fewer cars, and more green and open spaces are needed.
And it cites Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s plans for a Riverside Park and land bridge as a strong example of what the nation’s councils should be doing.
“In places like Stockton the penny has well and truly dropped. Stockton’s shift towards a community hub concept, no longer simply reliant on retail, has been remarkable. The Council really has led the way there – it just gets it – and more need to follow,”
