Halcyon staff know
the way to Amarillo At the Halcyon Centre in Thornaby staff put their musical talents to the test with a remake of Peter Kay’s cover of Amarillo.
The key workers who provide a day support service for adults, older people and people living with dementia took part in the ‘BBC Big Night In’ and added their own little twist - guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
New ways to support
The 0-19 service in Stockton- on-Tees has been doing all it can to make sure mums and mums-to-be get all the help and support they need to breastfeed during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The ‘Growing well, Growing healthy’ team usually organises breastfeeding support groups but the lockdown restrictions meant this was no longer possible.
However, they quickly reshaped the way they provide support by turning to Facebook and WhatsApp video calls.
Mum-of-two, Hayley, really appreciated it: “Around 4 months after feeling we had overcome most obstacles I had another setback and contacted Stockton Infant Feeding and managed to get virtual support and this helped me through. I am now still going strong breastfeeding at 5 months. I am so grateful to the team for being able to access the service during lockdown, it prevented me getting mastitis and helped me continue to feed throughout these difficult times.”

Feeding our children through lockdown
When schools and childcare providers closed their doors on 20 March for all but vulnerable and key workers’ families, hundreds of children eligible for free school meals could no longer get one.
But the Council quickly stepped into action, working with voluntary and community groups to make sure that these children didn’t go hungry. 1,300 meals were distributed every day to local families through the Borough’s Family Hubs and voluntary groups. The Council’s Catering Team also provided around 500 meals per day to schools that were providing school sessions.
We were amazed by the kind support from our local voluntary and community groups who offered to help with things like hosting local distribution points at Little Sprouts, Hardwick in Partnership and Teesside Vineyard Church.
Many families were unable to reach the distribution points due to their circumstances including the need to self- isolate but that didn’t stop the team’s determination to make sure no child went hungry. The Council, Family Action, Eastern Ravens and local volunteers delivered packed lunches to hundreds of local households every day for four weeks.
Thanks to the commitment of staff and volunteers the scheme was extended over the Easter break including the Bank Holidays. This is just one great example of teams and organisations pulling together to respond to families in need in a time of crisis. Thank you to everyone involved.
