Meet the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees
Councillor Mohammed Javed is the new Mayor of Stockton- on-Tees. He was officially installed in June, replacing Councillor Lynn Hall at the end of her time as Mayor.
Councillor Javed was born in Sander, a Kashmiri village in Azad Kashmir. He moved to Stockton in 1983 and joined other members of his family who were already settled in the area. For 13 years, Councillor Javed enjoyed working for the NHS in a role supporting people with learning disabilities whilst also finding time to run his own business. In May 2007 he was elected as the first Asian councillor for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
He lives in Oxbridge with his wife, Shabana and their four children. His eldest son, Saif is going to Leeds University to study Chemical Engineering and his eldest daughter Halimah is studying for her A-Levels at Egglescliffe Sixth Form. His two younger children, Farman and Zahoor also attend schools in the area. In his spare time, Councillor Javed enjoys watching his favourite sports - cricket, football and tennis.
Councillor Javed said: “I am honoured to be the first Asian Mayor of Stockton- on-Tees. I love meeting people from all backgrounds and I’m very proud to represent the people of the Borough.
“Although it is a difficult time right now and we are all experiencing hardships because of Coronavirus, I can assure the people of the Borough that I will work hard at my level best to help our communities through this difficult time.”
The Mayor’s chosen charities this year are The Great North Air Ambulance Service, Halo Project, and Macmillan Cancer Support.
This year’s Deputy Mayor is Councillor Kevin Faulks who was first elected in 2005 and represents the Ingleby Barwick West Ward. The Deputy Mayoress will be his wife, Patricia Faulks.
The retiring Mayor, Councillor Lynn Hall, raised a total of £20,048 during her time as Mayor for The Great North Air Ambulance Service and NeoAngels. She has also donated £2,000 to the children’s unit at Butterwick Hospice.
Councillor Hall raised £1,000 for the Mayor’s Benevolent Fund which supports local organisations and groups as well as £1,887.81 for the Borough’s Three Armed Forces Freedom Regiments.
