People who selflessly dedicate their time and expertise to others have been thanked by the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees for the positive difference they make to their communities.
Now in their ninth year, the Civic Awards highlight individuals, groups and businesses who set an inspirational example.
Service to the Community - Business
Tomlinson Hall & Co celebrated its 100th year of business in 2019 by donating 100 items to a good cause every month for 12 months, ranging from Neo Baby Grows to food parcels, supporting Period Poverty and sleeping bags for the homeless, to name but a few.
They have continued to take on apprenticeships and provide opportunities as well as encouraging female applicants to apply for what have been seen as male-dominated engineering roles.
Green Award
Cultivate Tees Valley has worked in partnership with Bright Minds, Big Futures (BMBF) to grow food security and transform unused urban and rural land into spaces where food is grown. Cultivate have been great supporters of BMBF and helped them to take over allotments in Thornaby.
The partnership focuses on combating isolation and improving mental health by connecting people through food and the environment. There is a strong focus on recruiting volunteers, alongside training and education programmes.
Carer/Foster Carer
Linda and John Atkinson have given 15 years’ outstanding service to fostering. Placements include sibling groups of up to four children, and children needing special support around religious or cultural beliefs. From respite for children who have moved to permanent placements, to providing transport so children can see their birth family, Linda and John have given consistency, security and love to all the children they have looked after.
Linda and John’s organised, determined and fun approach coupled with a tireless spirit have been an incredible asset to Stockton’s fostering service.
Special Recognition
Service to the Community - Individual
Ann and Len Jewett have given lifelong service to Guiding and Scouting across the Borough and the Tees Valley. Their achievements, together and individually, include leading Scout and Guide groups and span more than 20 years.
Together they produce annual reports, invitations, Gang show programmes, as well as volunteering to record and photograph all events.
Green Award
The Ranger Volunteers at Preston Park Museum & Grounds undertook a variety of tasks in 2019 to enhance the natural and heritage landscape of the park including creating a woodland area for children’s outdoor activities, removing invasive Himalayan Balsam, making haybales for the museum, woodland maintenance and a monthly litter pick.
The volunteers work tirelessly and are willing to take on any task to ensure its sustainability for future generations to enjoy.

Mrs Simpson and Mrs Clarke have stepped down from running the Yarm Luncheon Club after 15 successful years. Their members’ age ranges from 65 – 95 years, and the luncheon club is often the only time they socialise. The ladies organised shopping, cooking, serving and transport for the members.
