Our refuse heroes
The Council’s refuse collectors have continued their rounds as usual throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.
And they’ve been overwhelmed by the messages of support and thanks they’ve received, like this one: “The refuse collectors work tirelessly day in day out in all weathers. We can't let them be the forgotten heroes in this crisis!”
And it was more than just rubbish that one of our refuse teams unknowingly collected when they carried out their usual round in Yarm during lockdown.
After celebrating her daughter Keiahna’s (pictured) 18th birthday, Leanne’s husband cleared away all of the gift wrapping paper in time for the bin collection. A few hours later, Leanne realised that her husband had accidentally thrown out an envelope full of birthday money with the rubbish.
After calling the Council, Leanne was overjoyed to hear that the team had looked through the waste and had managed to find the envelope with the birthday money in it.
“We still can’t believe they took the time to look for what must have been a needle in a haystack and actually found it and returned it - it absolutely made the day even more special. Thank you so, so much to all involved for going that extra mile - it’s very much appreciated!”
Thank you NHS!
A Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council refuse collector is saying a huge thank you to the NHS workers who saved his life.
Lee Gill got COVID-19 in April – in just 48 hours he went from being at work to intensive care at the University Hospital of North Tees.
Thankfully after oxygen treatment he was well enough to be discharged three weeks later and he was applauded as he left intensive care.
He said: “I have been humbled beyond belief from what I've seen since being in hospital watching the staff work their amazing magic. Thanks to the NHS heroes and superstars who saved my life whilst risking their own.”
