Celebrating the Borough’s Unsung Heroes

Young Person Award

Hannah has shown true commitment and dedication to the Let’s Take Action group (LTA) for the last two years, supporting the work of the LTA.

She has shown that she can overcome the hardest of challenges at such a young age while striving to give her utmost to the group.

Health & Wellbeing Award

The White House provides outstanding care and support not only to their own residents, but to their local community. As Activity Coordinator, Julie Welford, has designed a person-centred activities program, promoted meaningful activities for dementia to improve the wellbeing of the service users, and developed strong community relationships.

The Let’s Take Action group (LTA) is dedicated to improving and shaping services offered to children living in Stockton-on-Tees. In four years, they have delivered seven large-scale consultation and campaigning events which have influenced decisions.

The group are involved in delivering training for new foster carers, inspecting the children’s ward at the University Hospital of North Tees hospital, and fundraising.

Service to the Community - Individual

Ron Harbron took over the running of the Happy Talk Stroke Group nine years ago in very sad circumstances after his wife passed away. Ron is the instrumental leader of the group who puts on weekly sessions to help dozens of Stockton-on- Tees families who have gone through the agony of seeing a loved one suffer a stroke.

Last year the group celebrated its 25th birthday, and Ron has taken the group from five members to over thirty!

Joe’s Speakeasy is a project about finding and sharing the extraordinary stories of Teesside’s older residents to reduce social isolation. In early 2017 Mike McGrother began writing an “opera” based on the tales that Joe Hall - a shipbuilder and lifelong Haverton Hill resident – would tell him whilst socialising over a drink. Tragically, three weeks before the opera was staged, Joe became ill and passed away. Mike wrote him a song and performed it at Joe’s funeral.

The following week, Joe’s Speakeasy was formed and has listened to countless stories and has helped older residents to feel less isolated.

Service to the Community - Business

The staff at Cubic’s Stockton office have thrown themselves into helping the community in our Borough by donating to local foodbanks, Children in Need, Save the Children and Zoe’s place.

They are also active in their community and volunteer at The Gift – wrapping donated presents for those less fortunate at Christmas time, have worked in a number of local schools to talk about careers, and have given a number of local students internships and placements.
