Learning from Home

A mum of four has returned to education to improve her skills and start her career to become

a guidance counsellor. Nadine Burnett (pictured) has attended a number of courses through Stockton- on-Tees Borough Council’s Learning and Skills Service including ICT Functional Skills and a distance learning course on children and young people’s mental health.

Nadine said, “I decided to enquire about the courses as I wanted to improve my basic skills and begin working towards my career goal to become a teacher and guidance counsellor. As a mum of four, I was concerned about my ability to commit to the course, but I found the courses to be flexible and the staff were incredibly kind and understanding towards my situation.

Learning that lasts

“During lockdown, my tutor June, has helped me to continue with my ICT qualification through remote learning. She provides all the resources and is always an email away if I need further support. We have also been having weekly Zoom meetings which I have enjoyed as I can catch up with the friends I have made on the course.

“With my confidence growing, I have started distance learning courses such as one on children and young people’s mental health and one on specific learning difficulties which has also helped me to support my children who have additional needs.”

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Learning & Skills service offer a range of free courses from beginners up to GCSE level equivalent. Both daytime and evening classes are available.

Thank-You Flo!

A seven- year-old from Eaglescliffe has been going the extra mile for her community.

Flo Graham decided to litter-pick on her way to school in a bid to help keep her local area clean. Her ‘rubbish run’ became part of her daily routine earlier this year, and she even started using biodegradable bags to add to her efforts.

After she was spotted on social media, our Community Services Team wanted to reach out and say a big thank you to her for all of her hard work. Thank you Flo!
