The first iteration of OpenSlots, a new AI creative platform for game development, has been launched for internal use by the team of executives behind content aggregator and slot studio ESA Gaming. CCO Thomas Smallwood explains why OpenSlots signals the next phase of game production.
What market gaps or pain points inspired the creation of OpenSlots?
We identified two major gaps in the current iGaming landscape that we felt we could really help fill.
First, operators are increasingly seeking greater control over their own content, wanting to create bespoke, branded, or seasonal games without relying entirely on third-party suppliers. OpenSlots is designed to empower these creators within the B2C sector, enabling them to design and launch the products they truly want with far greater speed and flexibility.
Second, the industry has become increasingly unsustainable for smaller studios. Many talented developers and designers lack the financial resources or publisher support needed to bring their ideas to market. OpenSlots was built to give those creators a voice. By embracing AI as a creative facilitator, we aim to democratise game development, providing experienced professionals and small teams with the tools to turn their ideas into certified, commercial-ready games without the prohibitive costs and timelines of traditional production.
Why is now the right time to launch an AI-powered slot creation platform?
We think that there is just a perfect storm for our market entry now. We have seen major advances in generative AI, while the actual market itself has never thrown up more barriers for general development, unless you are willing to invest large amounts of physical resource.
Tere is a clear need for faster, more flexible content creation that keeps 46
up with player demand and operator differentiation, and we think we sit in that sweet spot.
What are the biggest challenges you foresee in convincing operators and regulators to trust AI-generated games?
Te main challenge will be building confidence that AI can enhance, rather than replace, human creativity, and will do so while ensuring full compliance and transparency.
One thing we have never shied away from is our honesty in how we view AI as a tool, rather than a replacement. We’re leveraging AI without compromise, built on a rigid, certified Remote Gaming Server (RGS) foundation. Tis means every AI-generated concept still passes through the same compliance, fairness, and certification standards as any traditionally developed slot.
On the creative side, AI will accelerate the speed of creativity, not automate it away. It will help developers avoid the sunk cost fallacy and move away from the tendency to release games simply because of time and money already invested. Instead, creators can rapidly test, iterate, and publish games they truly believe in, without worrying about pre- spent time. Tis is especially powerful for smaller studios and operators with limited release roadmaps, who can’t afford large-scale production misfires the way major studios can.
What role will ESA Gaming play beyond distribution?
Te distribution role is the key thing. ESA Gaming will offer a clear route to market, providing commercial support through its broad distribution network and certification into regulated jurisdictions.
