€1.62bn Mitsotakis comes from a political family. His
father Konstantinos was Prime Minister between 1990 and 1993. Since coming to power, his gov- ernment has passed more than 400 pieces of legislation. One thing Greece does well is tourism, and this is the main driver of the economy. Te country boasts more than 16,000km of coastline and 6,000-plus islands and has a well-established tourism industry. In 2024, some 35.9 million visited the country (up from 32.7 million in 2023), made up of 26 million international visitors and 9.6 million domestic visitors, spending €21.7bn, up 5.4 per cent on the previous year. More than seven million visit Athens every
year whilst key visitors come from Germany and the UK. Air arrivals from EU countries increased by 11 per cent, with Eurozone visitors up by 12 per cent. However, tourism figures could be affected
next year thanks to a hike in tourism taxes, which came into effect at the beginning of this year. Revenues are going toward disaster relief efforts
and improving infrastructure whilst also promoting sustainable tourism in its most popular regions.

Te tax varies depending on the season and
ranges from a daily tourism tax on short-term rentals of €2 (up from 50c) in low season to €8 (€1.50 previously) in high season. Accommodation fees are also increasing with a €2 per night tax for one or two-star hotels up to €15 per night for five-star hotels during high season. Previously, this rate was €1.50 and €10, respectively. Holiday rentals through platforms such as
Airbnb will be subject to a seasonal fee - €2 low season and €8 high season – whilst cruise travellers will see a daily levy up to €20 per person depending on the port and season. Santorini and Mykonos will charge €20 compared to €5 for other islands such as Athens. Mykonos for example attracts up to 20,000 tourists daily and is one of Greece’s top destinations. Greece anticipates collecting around €400m
annually from the increase in fees, double the amount previously Last year, some 448 investment proposals were
approved for €83m worth of funding to help strengthen tourism entrepreneurship and extend the tourism season. Tey specifically target the regions of Attica and South Aegean. In 2023, the

Te
6.2sq.km Elliniko site, currently under con- struction, was once the home to the capital’s airport from the 1930s up until 2001. It closed down after the new international Eleftherios Ven- izelos airport opened to the east of the city in time for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Te integrated casino resort will be named
