Iowa became the first state to legalise riverboat casinos in 1989 with the Excursion Gambling Boat Act. Tis was followed by the authorisation of electronic gaming devices at racetracks in 1994 with table games approved in 2005. Today there are 15 landbased commercial


casinos in Iowa, plus three riverboat casinos and one racino (Prairie Meadows Racetrack) and four tribal casinos. Tere are 14,362 slots in the com- mercial casinos and 2,643 in the tribal. Te four tribal casinos include Blackbird Bend

from Cedar Rapids Development Group through a partnership with Peninsula Pacific Entertainment and the commission will vote on the proposed $250m casino plan in February 2025.

Tere are four commercial casinos and seven tribal casinos in Kansas operating 4,964 slots and 4,300 slots respectively.


Commercial casinos are operated under the


authority of Kansas Lottery and regulated by the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission (RGC) after legislation to create four casinos was approved in 2007 and the casinos were opened between 2009 and 2017 in Dodge City, Mulvane, Pittsburg and Kansas City Commercial casinos can offer slots and table


games and after legislation was passed in 2022 retail and mobile sports betting are now also permitted via landbased sportsbooks within the casino properties. Total GGR in Kansas amounted to $588.3m. Commercial casino revenue was $355.8m from slots and $50m from table gaming. Te legislation means commercial casinos are


authorised to partner with up to 50 retail locations and host sports wagering kiosks at their facilities plus a maximum of three branded mobile platforms at each casino. At the end of 2023 there were six online sports-


books operational in Kansas including BetMGM, DraftKings, Caesars, PointsBet and FanDuel. Sports betting revenue amounted to $182.4m in 2023 of which online sports betting was responsible for $177.5m of this. Meanwhile the Prairie Band Casino and Resort


became the first tribal casino in the state of Kansas to offer sports betting in 2024 after a new Tribal-State Gaming Compact was signed. Te tribe’s retail outlet was followed by a mobile


app launched in September last year. Te tribe has signed a partnership with Kambi. Prairie Band Casino opened in 1998 near Topeka as the first full service casino in Kansas and is operated by the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and it holds 1,200 slots, 25 table games and 400 seat bingo hall. Te seven tribal casinos are governed by the


State Gaming Agency and the first tribal casino, Golden Eagle (Kickapoo Tribe) opened in 1996 on Kickapoo reservation which were later followed by the Sac and Fox Casino (Sac and Fox Tribe), Prairie Band Casino, Casino White Cloud (Iowa Tribe), 7th Street Casino and Crosswinds Casino (Wyandotte Nation) and Downstream Casino Re- sort (Quapaw Tribe).
