Jumio: AI’s safer gambling role
As regulations continue to evolve and fraudsters become increasingly sophisticated, gambling operators must adopt advanced AI-powered solutions to meet the challenge, explains Alix Melchy, VP of AI at Jumio.
Europe’s sports betting market is expected to reach nearly $90m by 2030. While many enjoy sports betting as entertainment, regulators are cracking down on online fraud, which is rising alongside gambling’s shift to digital.
Te UK Gambling Commission recently issued new guidance on anti-money laundering checks in response to the increased use of stolen debit cards in online gaming — fraud that puts consumer safety and operators’ business at risk.
BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION AND AUTHENTICATION
When opening accounts, many gaming operators typically require users to provide a government-issued ID for age and identity verification. While this process helps to establish a basic level of security, it’s challenged by the rise of synthetic identities, where generative AI can combine various legitimate IDs or create highly realistic new documents to get around ‘Know Your Customer’ screening processes.
Although these synthetic IDs are much more difficult to spot with conventional means, AI itself is a perfect tool to cross-check IDs across massive databases with millions of data points to compare the digital footprint of a genuine person versus a fake. Moreover, relying solely on ID checks leaves platforms open to prospective players using someone else’s ID to create an account. Te actual players may be underage, someone evading self-exclusion tools to fight gambling addiction, banned fraudsters, or even people on sanctions/PEP watchlists.
Introducing a layer of AI-powered biometric verification at player onboarding can provide additional security. Tis process uses face- based biometrics to compare a player's selfie

with their ID to confirm that they are who they say they are. Operators using AI in this way can have greater confidence that only those who meet the legal gaming age can access the platform, deposit funds into an account or gamble with their own money or a free bet, in line with the UK Gambling Commission's tightening of regulations in 2019.
With the rapid development of generative AI- powered deepfakes, it’s also increasingly important to ensure that the data is captured from a living person who is physically present, not simply a representation of someone from a stolen identity document.
Te most advanced biometric verification systems detect liveness from anomalies in minute details from a selfie or video — while invisible to the human eye, these details are tell-tale signs of manipulation for AI systems trained on a wealth of deepfake data. Tese add an extra layer of protection by verifying the authenticity of the person undergoing verification.
It’s not only during onboarding that gambling platforms are exposed to fraud. Criminals also employ tactics like account takeovers and
