Geographically Prince Edward Island is located in the Gulf of St Lawrence and connects to New Brunswick via the 12.9km long Confederation Bridge.Te island is a land of quaint rural communities and is divided into three counties – Prince, Queens, and Kings – whilst the capital city Charlottetown is located on the southern shore. PEI saw $467m generated in tourism spend in 2022 with over one million visitors.
Te Prince Edward Island Lotteries Commission was set up in 1976 under the Lotteries Commission act to manage the lottery schemes on behalf of the province. Tis is now run via the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.
ALC operates retail and internet sales for the four Atlantic provinces including the two Red Shores facilities on PEI. Te legislative framework for gaming activities on PEI is via the Gaming Centres Control Regulations.
Te Prince Edward Island gaming industry is made up primarily of VLT gaming and lotteries which saw a total of $68.9m in net revenues for ALC last year.
LOTTERY - Te ALC includes retail lotteries, online lotteries, destination and the Red Shores Racetrack facilities. Total net revenues for the ALC on Prince Edward Island was $68.9m in 2022/23, compared to $59.1m in 2021/22.
Tis is divided between $23.6m in net revenues from lottery ticket sales; $23.2m in VLTs and $21.9m from Red Shores venues. Net profit was $29.3m compared to $23.4m the year previously. Tere are 150 lottery retail terminals on the island.
HORSE RACING - Te Red Shores racetrack entertainment centres are operated on behalf of the province by ALC. Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at Charlottetown Driving Park opened in 2005 as a racino and the harness racetrack has been in operation since 1888. Te facility was renamed in 2009 as Red Shores, the same year Summerside Raceway was converted into a racino. Summerside is believed to be the oldest racing track in the country opening back in 1886.
Net revenue at the two Red Shores was $21.9m, a 25 per cent increase over the previous year thanks to a return to normal operations plus the introduction of an events business. Casino games saw $17.3m in net revenues, racing
