UK - Entain’s strategic review concludes A strategic review by the Board’s Capital Allocation Committee of Entain’s portfolio of markets, brands and verticals, which commenced in January 2024 has concluded. With the objective of maximising shareholder value and reflecting the operational progress of the business, the conclusions of the review were that ‘Entain has the appropriate portfolio of diversified strategic assets, brands, capabilities and geographic footprint to ensure it is well positioned to deliver high quality long term growth.’

The review added: “There remains significant upside by focusing on delivery of the Group’s strategy of returning to organic revenue growth, expanding margins and winning in the US. Entain’s balance sheet and leverage position is robust and has been strengthened by the recent extension of Entain’s RCF and term loan repricing and add-ons. Crystalbet, the leading gaming brand in Georgia, is non-core to the Group. As such, strategic alternatives for this business will be considered, including interest already received from potential acquirers”

As part of the review, the CapCo considered developments in Entain’s key markets and the operational progress made towards its strategic objectives including Brazil returning to strong double-digit revenue growth during Q2, with actions taken to improve customer acquisition and retention accelerating performance.

Slovenia - WestLotto stays in charge of lottery Europe’s largest lottery remains the responsibility of WestLotto. At the General Meeting of the 19 Eurojackpot countries, the state lottery company of North Rhine-Westphalia in Bled, Slovenia, was confirmed in its administrative leadership role for another three years. In addition, WestLotto Managing Director, Andreas Kötter, was re-elected as Chairman of the world’s most successful lottery launch in recent years.

Since the first Eurojackpot draw in 2012, the threads for the Eurojackpot have come together at WestLotto. At the company’s headquarters in Münster, the tips from all participating countries are recorded and the winnings and odds are evaluated. In Bled, the 34 state-licensed lottery companies also confirmed WestLotto’s leadership role in the range of games that reach around 325 million people in Europe.

After starting with state-licensed lottery companies from seven countries, the Eurojackpot cooperation has now grown to 19 nations. Most recently, the Greek company OPAP joined the merger in March. Germany is involved with all 16 companies of the federal states from the German Lotto and Toto Block (DLTB). The draws are held every Tuesday and Friday.

P14 WIRE / PULSE / INSIGHT / REPORTS

British casinos, operating under the 1968 Gaming Act, will be allowed to offer more slot machines on their gaming floors with all casinos able to bring sports betting into their venues. It will also abolish the ban on debit cards on gaming machines in casinos, pubs and other venues, allowing transactions of up to £100 a time with the use of chip and pin.

Te moves come as part of a series of measures aimed at modernising the country's land-based gambling sector. Tese changes, outlined in a response to a consultation on the industry, include relaxing certain restrictions on casinos, arcades, and bingo halls while also implementing safeguards to protect young people and enhance licensing authority fees.

Stuart Andrew, the Minister for Sport, Gambling and Civil Society, said: “Tis will introduce a range of liberalising measures for venues like casinos, bingo halls and arcades, alongside other provisions to protect young people and children, as well as increasing the fees licensing authorities can charge for gambling premises licences.

“Many of the current restrictions on venues like

casinos and bingo halls derive from the assumption that restrictions on the supply of gambling, such as the number of gaming machines available in a venue, were an important protection. Te legislation had not envisaged the rise of online gambling and the ability to gamble at any time, regardless of location.

“In light of this, restrictions on availability are now less important for protecting customers than factors such as the characteristics of the product and the quality of monitoring a customer’s play in a venue. As set out in the Gambling Act Review white paper, the measures we consulted on are therefore necessary to modernise the outdated and overly restrictive regulations that apply to the land-based gambling sector.

Michael Dugher, CEO of the Betting and Gaming Council, added: “Casinos are a vital pillar of the UK’s leisure, hospitality and tourism sector and we welcome the Government’s consultation response which is positive progress on the modest, long-overdue but mission critical modernisation reforms needed for the land- based casino sector to compete and thrive.”
