Last Swedish Casino Likely to Close
Of the four original casinos, only Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm remains - and it’s likely to close in the next 18 months.
Te gambling entity and operator of the casino, Svenska Spel, said that there is no possibility of achieving profitability and shared the Government’s assessment.

Africa - SIS expands presence with Bitville SIS (Sports Information Services) has signed an agreement with Bitville Gaming to deliver its products to sportsbooks in regulated markets across Africa. Te Swedish government is considering closing down the country's last land-based casino, Casino Cosmopol, in Stockholm saying it 'will be phased out as it no longer fulfils its purpose’.
Te government has presented a memorandum with proposals for a change in the law that means that land-based casino Casino Cosmopol would close having failed in its challenge to achieve profitability and the fact that a liquidation is not expected to have any major impact on illegal gambling.
Te government-owned gambling entity and operator of the casino, Svenska Spel, said it shares the Government's assessment of the conditions for the business and that there is no possibility of achieving profitability. Te amendment is proposed to enter into force on January 1 2026. Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm will remain open as usual until further notice.
For several years, Casino Cosmopol has had declining profitability and visitor numbers as more and more people choose to play online,
not least when it comes to games at online casinos. To limit losses, Svenska Spel closed the casino in Sundsvall in 2020, followed by Casino Cosmopol in Gothenburg and Malmö, which closed in February. Of the four original casinos, only Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm remains.
Erik Strand, President and CEO of Svenska Spel, said: "We share the assessment that it is no longer possible to operate Casino Cosmopol profitably. Te shift from gambling at land- based casinos to online gambling accelerated after the re-regulation of the gaming market in 2019 and the subsequent pandemic, when Casino Cosmopol was closed.”
Te legislative amendment proposed by the government aims to remove the form of gambling at a casino from the licence type state gaming. As a result, Svenska Spel will no longer be allowed to provide games at a casino in Sweden. Te remaining casino that is currently operated by Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm would then be closed, which would affect about 200 employees.
Italy Bragg launches online slots content with Sisal
Bragg Gaming Group has announced its in-house developed proprietary slots content certified for the Italian market will launch with Italian online casino, sports betting and lottery operator, Sisal.
Te agreement covers slots titles from Bragg’s studios Atomic Slot Lab and Indigo Magic, including titles such as Egyptian Magic, Fairy Dust and Cai Fu Emperor Ways from Atomic Slot Lab and Sevens & Suns, Alpha Gold and Phoenix Fury from Indigo Magic.
Inspired by features, themes and mechanics from some of North America’s best-loved land-based casino slots, Bragg’s Atomic Slot Lab studio focuses on using these insights to develop a brand-new generation of online content for players. Indigo Magic works to develop and deliver titles which use up to date best practices in ideation and game
creation globally with a localised data-driven approach which accounts for local trends and preferences to release next-generation content.
All content deployed by Sisal in Italy will be under Bragg’s existing content distribution agreement with Microgame, first signed in March 2022. Since launching in the Italian market in 2023, Bragg has localised and certified more than 45 online casino games in the territory, including titles from Bragg’s two in-house proprietary content studios and its Powered By Bragg partners.
