Hand lettering at a glance
Hand lettering is set to be big news, so if you want to try your hand at creating your own font, we’ve got some handy pointers for you
Rosemary’s TOP TIPS
Follow these few simple hints for the perfect finish
l Use a piece of vellum that is wide enough to wrap around to the back of the cardstock layer on both sides to avoid unsightly glue marks.
l Don’t wet the cardstock too much as it will affect the performance of the pens when creating the brushstroke border.
l When tracing letters from the workbook only, lean on the page you are tracing
from. Fold all other pages away from you to give your writing hand stability.
l Add a drop shadow to your letters with the grey Dream Pen from the Deluxe Lettering Kit.
l When creating the ‘smooshing’ background create a pastel effect by using kitchen roll to dab off some of the colour when wet.
HAND LETTERING refers to creating hand-drawn letters using single or multiple strokes.
DIFFERENT TYPES of pens and nib sizes can be used to create different typefaces and decorative effects. A fine nib used in single stroke produces a clean and simple look, and the same pen can also be used to add pattern within the space of hand-drawn block letters.
BRUSH NIBS create different line widths depending on the hand pressure on the downward strokes. To get the best results, sit with your lower arm resting relaxed on a table.
BOUNCE LETTERING is when you form letters without a baseline grid. This freedom can produce some very interesting results. Why not decorate a page or envelope of hand lettering by adding hand-drawn borders, symbols and drawings.
DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START? Our range of Faber-Castell Pitt Artist pens are the perfect place. The high-pigment, water-based ink doesn’t penetrate paper and is waterproof once dry.
