DEFINITION A comma is a punctuation mark ( , ) used to separate parts of a sentence or to separate the items in a list.

Examples: Commas are used to separate items in a list: I’m going to buy new jeans, tops and shoes when the shops reopen.

Commas are used to separate adjectives that describe the same noun: The sad, untidy child walked slowly along the path.

Commas are used to separate clauses in a sentence: Maria, who is from Spain, won the competition.

Commas are used to punctuate direct speech by ‘introducing’ the speech: The man shouted, ‘Look out!’

DEFINITION An apostrophe is a punctuation mark ( ’ ) used to show possession or that some letters are absent.
BEING CREATIVE
Examples: Apostrophes show that letters or numbers are absent: I’m tired = I am tired. I was born in ’09 = I was born in 2009.

An apostrophe is used before the letter ‘s’ to show that something belongs to someone or something. Examples: My sister’s car. The dog’s owner. Exception: It’s = it is or it has. We don’t use it’s for possession/belonging.
