Writing an extended response When answering exam questions, it is important to give an extended response. This means that you should: 1. Provide a number of paragraphs in your answer. The ideas in these paragraphs should be connected and each idea should support your response to the question asked.

In Odyssey 1 you learned about the elements that are often present in a good opening to a novel or short story.
A strong opening to a novel or short story will: n Hook the reader into continuing with the story. n Establish the setting of the action i.e. where and when it takes place. n Introduce at least one character of interest. n Get the plot and action under way.
