Reading
You are about to read an extract from Lord of the Flies by William Golding. This is a novel about a group of boys who are stranded after a plane crash on an uninhabited island, and their attempts to organise themselves so they can survive. The extract sees one of the main characters, Jack, out hunting for food. 1. You should read the extract at least twice. On the first reading, you should try to follow the plot. When you finish, summarise the plot of the extract in 40 words or fewer.
2. Next, read it for a second time. Read from the opening until Jack says ‘got any water?’ and make a note of how many sentences have six words or fewer. What effect does the mixing of short and long sentences have on this extract?
