Multi -disciplinary Clinical Matrons
We are always looking for new ways to help our staff progress their careers – and not all of our Clinical Matrons come from a nursing background.
Laura Dyer is the Clinical Matron on Twyford Ward. Laura is a highly experienced physiotherapist specialising in neurology, putti ng her in an excellent positi on to lead a team of nurses and therapists on our award-winning hyper-acute stroke unit.
“Physiotherapy is vital to neurology and stroke pati ents, so my skills are really uti lised in this role. It’s more important that you are an expert in stroke care, than the parti cular role you have. I’m at the heart of multi -disciplinary team meeti ngs because my background allows me to see the whole picture. I can be really holisti c in my approach and am in a great place to make decisions about pati ent care.
I’ve been able to successfully integrate the physiotherapists under Clinical Matron management. By acti ng as a bridge between the nurses and the physios, I’ve been able to create a more cohesive team.
I’m keen to cascade my skills not only to the physios, but to the nurses as well, and they have been really open to that. Nurses are on the ward 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which means they can help pati ents with their exercises at ti mes when the physios are unavailable, helping pati ents to recover faster.”
