Att racti ng and nurturing talent from overseas

Jethri Catalan is one of a group of nurses we recruited from the Philippines last year. In order to work as nurses in the UK, they needed to demonstrate their competency by passing the Objecti ve Structured Clinical Examinati on (OSCE).

The exam has a nati onal average pass rate of just 49%, but with the help of the Trust, 93% of the nurses we put forward for the exam achieved their dream of becoming qualifi ed in the UK.

Jethri, who is now working in criti cal care at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, said: “I worked on an Intensive Care Unit back home, so this is what I always wanted to do when I got here. It’s a challenging but grati fying place to work because you oft en get to see people recover quickly.

Nursing is not so diff erent in the UK. It’s sti ll about caring for pati ents, but the culture of nursing isn’t quite the same and we had some new techniques to learn.

Passing the exam proves that we have learned the Briti sh way of doing things and was the result of a lot of hard work. We spent many hours practi cing the techniques and were given a lot of help by colleagues in the Trust, who gave up their weekends to help us.”

Our latest cohort of nurses from the Philippines celebrate becoming UK registered nurses
