Clinical Midwifery Matrons

Having launched the role of clinical matrons on our wards last spring, we created the role of Clinical Midwifery Matron in our maternity units last October.

While the role of matron had previously existed in a diff erent form for nurses, this is a completely new role for our midwifery teams – and it’s one that Jo Holland, who works on the Labour Ward at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, has embraced fully.

"I’m really enjoying having stepped up into the role. There’s real autonomy because it was a brand new role with a blank sheet. I’ve worked on the Labour Ward for a long ti me, so I have an idea of what makes a good Labour Ward and how we can improve things for pati ents and staff . I enjoyed looking at what I had and where I want the service to be and fi nding the right pathway between the two.”

Jo is parti cularly enjoying getti ng the chance to develop her team and has already given Maternity Support Worker Zoe Lane the opportunity to train as an Associated Practi ti oner.

“I’m already noti cing that Zoe is developing a more proacti ve way to approaching situati ons. Instead of asking what she can do to help the midwives, she is thinking of things she can do to help, saving the team valuable ti me.”

Zoe, who began the two-year course in January, added: “I’m really enjoying the course and by doing it, I have more knowledge and ability to support women through labour and aft erwards.

I will also be able to support the midwives bett er. I wanted to do this to make things bett er for my colleagues, as well as women coming in to use the service.”

“Developing the team is a part of the role that I really enjoy. It’s great to be able to make the most of skills that people have and give them the chance to improve themselves.”
