Time to care and freedom to lead

We were the fi rst trust in the country to introduce the role of Clinical Matron. The aim was to re-invest in and value senior nurses, midwives and therapists working to an advanced practi ce level with the autonomy to manage their area. Our Clinical Matrons are expected to be clinical for 80% of the ti me.

More than 40 senior nurses, midwives and therapists are now in post across our three hospitals, responsible for the running of an individual ward or department. They spend their ti me working clinically and making important decisions on how pati ents are cared for. They are role models, providing visible, clinical leadership for their teams – and rather than being ti ed up in meeti ngs and with administrati on, they are on the wards, where they make the biggest diff erence to our pati ents.
