Advanced Nurse Practi ti oner roles

We have given our Clinical Matrons the autonomy to decide the best way forward for their wards. They are the people on the ground, in the ideal place to make important clinical decisions about quality of care and staffi ng.

Following consultati on with pati ent groups, Laura Osman, the Clinical Matron on McGill Ward, our Acute Medical Unit at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, identi fi ed a need for some of her staff to step up into the role of Advanced Nurse Practi ti oner.

Advanced Nurse Practi ti oners are senior nurses who have been trained to practi ce at a higher level. Under the supervision of consultants, they are able to assess a pati ent, carry out a physical examinati on, request tests, make a diagnosis and put a treatment plan in place.

Laura said: “We found that pati ents want a one-stop service. They don’t want to have to keep having to explain to diff erent people what their symptoms are, they want one person to see and assess them, which is what an Advanced Nurse Practi ti oner can provide.

“Having the autonomy to put things like this in place is what I really like about the role of clinical matron. It’s great to be able to off er opportuniti es for my staff to progress their careers and it’s a massive opportunity to develop the team.”

Sam Humby is about to become one of the fi rst fully qualifi ed Advanced Nurse Practi ti oners working in acute assessment in the whole of Wessex.

“I already feel like I’m making a huge diff erence to pati ents. It’s so nice to be able to see people through their journey. You treat people on the ward and then you get the chance to see them for a review six weeks later.

I am really confi dent in the role and would not want to do anything else. I’m also looking forward to passing on my knowledge and helping to train the next batch of Advanced Nurse Practi ti oners.”
