Improving our maternity services

Our midwives have been piloti ng a scheme giving pregnant women more choice on antenatal care and childbirth.

Bordon was the fi rst area in Hampshire to pilot the Maternity Choice and Personalisati on Pioneer programme. The programme provides access to relevant informati on and a named midwife to help mothers-to-be to make choices that are the best fi t for their personal circumstances.

Labour Line, which began as an innovati ve idea thought up by one of our midwives, has expanded. We set up Labour Line, which is a telephone service based in the local ambulance control centre, in 2013. Midwives from our Trust, as well as University Hospital Southampton and now Portsmouth Hospitals, provide a fi rst point of contact for women and their families across Hampshire, providing support and advice during early labour.

Ria Haydon, one of the midwives taking part in the initi al pilot in Bordon, said: “Being able to off er women a variety of choice is so important. That’s why I feel this pilot will benefi t the women in the Bordon area, highlighti ng the choices that are available to them.”
