Recruiti ng the best staff and developing skills

Our partnership with The Open University gives staff a great opportunity to improve their career prospects. Healthcare Assistants, identi fi ed as potenti al candidates through the appraisal process, are encouraged to apply and if selected, they conti nue to work in that role while they train to become a nurse.

Last year, a total of 14 staff from across our hospitals enrolled onto the Open University pre-registrati on nursing degree programme, with another 13 set to begin in September.

Laura McCleester qualifi ed as a registered nurse last summer aft er four years studying part-ti me with The Open University while also working as a Healthcare Assistant within the Trust.

“I always knew that I wanted to be a nurse, but joining the Trust as a Healthcare Assistant gave me a chance to see what it was like to work on the wards. I fell in love with the job and from that point I knew that I wanted to be a nurse.

The good thing about The Open University is that it’s not just about grades, they also take your experience into account. There are so many Healthcare Assistants out there who would make great nurses but might not think that they can ever att ain that because they don’t have the grades. With this programme in place, they can."

“Doing the degree was challenging, but it was all so worth it in the end. Putti ng on the blue uniform is what I have been working towards for four years. It’s an honour to do the job.”
