Healthcare Support Workers’ communicati on training

We use a simulated approach to training in many areas, bringing situati ons to life to help staff learn. Having identi fi ed that Healthcare Support Workers would benefi t from specialist training in communicati ng in challenging situati ons, scenarios were created to help them deal with distressed pati ents, potenti al complainants and colleagues.

Some situati ons are played out by trained professionals to highlight the wrong approach, with the group then talking through what should have happened, while other scenarios see members of the group act out situati ons with simulated pati ents.

Feedback has been very positi ve and the programme has been extended to other teams.

“I’ve picked up lots of useful informati on and advice and I’m sure it will have a really positi ve impact when I go onto a ward. Seeing real-life scenarios helps you to see what would and would not help in certain situati ons.”
