Increasing our range of skills
We are passionate about enabling our staff to branch out and take on roles that are not always seen as a natural progression.
By encouraging specialists to move into diff erent areas, we are able to improve the range of skills available in a team. This is good for all of the staff as they are able to learn from one another, while our pati ents benefi t from the additi onal knowledge on off er.
Having amassed a great deal of experience over the course of 13 years working as a physiotherapist, Fiona Burrell has been appointed as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist within the respiratory department’s Clinical Nurse Specialist team.
She specialises in airway disease, parti cularly Chronic Obstructi ve Pulmonary Disease and Asthma, and is able to off er diff erent knowledge to the nurses already on the team. As a result of her appointment, we have been able to set up physiotherapist-led clinics for dysfuncti onal breathing, meaning pati ents no longer need to be referred to other hospitals.
“My experti se is really useful when it comes to aiding chest clearance and breathlessness management.
I talk pati ents through breathing techniques that will aid the removal of mucus that can get stuck on the lungs. In terms of breathlessness management, I can give pati ents exercises and advice from a therapy point of view. I just bring something diff erent to the team.”
