Dementi a care

Supporti ng pati ents with dementi a is something that we take very seriously. We are proud that our hospitals are dementi a friendly and our determinati on to ensure that we conti nue to improve the way we care for pati ents with dementi a saw us expand our dedicated dementi a team from four staff to 14 over the past year.

As a result of this expansion, we are now able to ensure that there are two members of the team at both of our main sites every day, off ering leadership, advice and support to staff , the pati ents and their families on our wards.

With a service that is now available 12 hours a day, 365 days a year, the team are available to assess pati ents and provide specialist advice and support sooner, something that is proven to improve long term outcomes. They work with staff on the wards to provide more individual and holisti c care plans and have the specialist skills to take on the management of pati ents.

Other steps forward in dementi a care

• We have introduced a fi nger food menu to help pati ents with dementi a, who oft en struggle with big meals. Tea at two and cakes and shakes are also available, allowing pati ents to get the nutriti on they need to recover from illness faster.

• In order to help staff and the public understand the eff ects of ageing and dementi a, we have special suits that impair the user’s mobility, vision and hearing, making everyday tasks markedly harder.

• We conti nue to support John’s Campaign across all of our inpati ent wards – welcoming loved ones of pati ents with dementi a to stay with them while they are in our hospitals. Rachel Hayden, Dementi a Nurse Specialist, is a John’s Campaign Ambassador and we have been able to provide reclining chairs for carers to use on some wards.
