Tackling delirium

A team led by nurses, including doctors, physiotherapists and pharmacists, are raising awareness of the impact of delirium and developing a teaching programme for all staff in criti cal care areas.

To help prevent the problem, we have established a quiet period in criti cal care each aft ernoon to give pati ents a break, as well as a period of protected sleep between 11pm and 6am every night, with lights going down so pati ents are able to diff erenti ate between day and night.

We are now looking at ways of improving the assessment and documentati on of delirium, making sure that it is discussed as part of multi -disciplinary team meeti ngs and ward rounds. We have also put measures in place to help pati ents remain orientated, with simple things like ensuring that all clocks on a ward show exactly the same ti me having been found to help.

Rachel Newell, Lead Clinical Educator, Criti cal Care: “We want to do all we can to prevent pati ents at the Trust developing delirium, which is not a nice experience to go through. Pati ents with delirium can be very diffi cult to treat and it is hard for families to see their loved ones when they have the conditi on.”
