1.1 Nelson Mandela always listened to all parties, and avoided violence as much as possible. He put the needs of others first and spent his life working for the good of others. He was extremely courageous and even went to prison, which means that he was also very committed to his beliefs and to the welfare of others. Mandela gave up his freedom to fight for justice for all South Africans.


1.2 No, some people disagreed with the way he was trying to bring about justice and freedom. It would have been easier to give in to them. He also had to give up his freedom and work tirelessly.


1.3 No, people did not always like what he was trying to do. Some people in the ANC wanted to fight for their freedom. People in the government got very angry with him and eventually he was imprisoned.


1.4 Mandela worked hard to create a better life for other people. We can learn from the way he put the needs of other people before his own. We can also learn not be pretend that we do not notice when something happens that is not right, but to stand up and speak up for our beliefs.


2 Answers will differ, but learners might mention the fact that he went to prison to help others, or that he never gave in to violent methods.


3 Yes, he wanted justice for all South Africans. He wanted a country in which all people had the same rights and could vote for the leaders that they want. 4 They honour him because of the sacrifice he made for all South Africans.
