Pacing
This unit should take five hours to complete. There are four activities, which will take up at least half of this time. These activities all consolidate what has just been learnt, so it will be time well spent.

This activity gives learners the opportunity to use their prior knowledge to classify settlements by interpreting the images.
Teaching guidelines
• Let learners work in pairs to do this activity. • Talk about the image of Settlement 2 (the village) in class before the learners start on their own. Point out what learners should look for – the buildings – what are they used for? Is their land used for farming? Are there roads, is there a lot of traffic?
• Allow learners about 10 minutes to work in pairs and finish the activity. • Go through the answers in class. Discuss what learners have observed. • Learners can write down the answers to Questions 1.3 and 2 in their notebooks.
Suggested answers
1.1 Learners could make the following observations: • In Settlement 1 there is farmland around the settlement and some trees. • In Settlement 2 the people are growing vegetables • In Settlement 3 there are fields and quite a few buildings • In Settlement 4 the land is used for tall buildings and roads.
1.2 In Settlement 1 the buildings are used for living in. In Settlement 2 some buildings are to live in, others could be to store equipment or for animals In Settlement 3 some of the buildings are houses, others could be shops or schools or churches. In Settlement 4 the tall buildings could be offices or residential flats. The street level is probably shops.
1.3 Photograph 1 is a farm – it has lots of farmland and very few buildings. Photograph 2 shows a village – there is a group of houses. Photograph 2 is a town – it has more buildings than the village and also roads. Photograph 4 is a big city – it has tall buildings and busy streets.
