Unit 1 People and places Unit introduction

Learner’s Book page 8

• We will look at different places where people live. Some people live on farms, while others live in villages, towns or cities

• We will also learn about the different jobs people do. Where people live will influence the types of jobs that are available. For example, people working on the land will only live on farms or in villages. People working in factories will live in cities, and maybe towns.

• Different roads and footpaths are found in different settlements. Sandy roads or tracks are mostly found on farms and in settlements. Cities have mostly tar roads.

• Different buildings are used for different things. For example, a house or flat is a place where people live. A garage is a place where motorcars are stored. An office block is a place where people work. Here they do mostly administrative type of work.

Teaching ideas and tips

This unit builds on learners’ knowledge of their surroundings. Every learner will be able to identify with some of the pictures of places, buildings and roads. As you work through the unit, keep on asking questions to the class such as:

• Which of these pictures is like our settlement? • Which building near here is like the one in the picture? • Who knows of an animal shelter near here? • Where is our nearest church/mosque? • What is the road outside school made of? Is it sand or gravel or tar?

Resources

If you have extra pictures of places and buildings bring them to class to show the learners.

Vocabulary

New words are in the New word boxes in the margin of the Learner’s Book. Make sure you draw attention to these as you go through the unit. When you read the

text, point out the new words in the context where they are used. Encourage learners to use the new words in their own sentences.
