Unit introduction • We will learn about compass directions. Learners will be introduced to the four main directions – North, South, East and West.


• We will also learn to read compass directions on a map


• We will learn about compass directions in our area, for example in what direction our school is from our house.


Teaching ideas and tips Many learners have a bit of a problem with compass directions, so make sure you keep it simple. The best way is to establish where East and West are at home and at school (sunrise and sunset) and then work from there as in the Learner’s Book. Show learners a selection of maps and point out that the North point is always shown


so that we know which way to look at the map. North is usually straight up the page. Resources

New words are in the New word boxes in the margin of the Learner’s Book. Make sure you draw attention to these as you go through the Unit. When you read the text, point out the new words in the context where they are used. Encourage learners to use the new words in their own sentences.

This unit should take about one hour. Spend as much time as needed on this, as it forms the basis for further map skills
