Unit 1 What is a good leader? Learner’s Book page 56 Unit introduction

• A good leader is someone who can inspire and organise others. • Schools, communities and countries have leaders that are mostly chosen by the people themselves.

• Good leaders listen to people, work for the good of others, work with a team, have courage, are brave, are committed to their beliefs, are committed to others and will give up something for the benefit of other people.

Teaching ideas and tips

Allow learners to identify leaders in their communities, and to think about the qualities of those leaders. Explain to learners that good leaders work for the good of others, work with a team, have courage, are brave, are committed to their beliefs, are committed to others and will give up something for the benefit of other people.

Resources

Posters, photographs or pictures from magazines or newspapers of well known leaders in different fields, such as sport leaders, political leaders or community leaders; biographies of community leaders from local newspapers.

Pacing

This unit should take about two hours to complete. There is one activity in the unit, which will take up at least half an hour. This activity will help learners to apply the characteristics of leaders to a leader they know. This will help to consolidate the learning.

Activity 1 Leaders in your area Teaching guidelines

Learner’s Book page 58

Learners should think about the qualities of good leaders in order to decide whether a leader that they have chosen – someone whom they know – has those qualities. Allow learners to discuss a chosen person’s leadership qualities in groups. Learners should write down some of their ideas.
